Hi everyone,

I’m hoping you all can help with this one.  Kristi and I had a request from someone in the school system about helping a student with a brain injury that waas acquired in infancy – surgical removal of part of the brain.

The student is now in elementary school, and the school’s special education coordinator wanted to find out local Denver resources that could help them figure out how to best support this student.  The Resource Directory link was temporarily down this afternoon, so I emailed some folks, and here’s what I came up with for her.  Please add to the list!

- Obviously BIAC
- CO Dept of Education:
Kristy Werther is apparently the “principal consultant for all things brain injury”.

- Jeanne Dise-Lewis’ “Brainstars” program at Children’s Hospital:

For the parents to find support, I suggested
- BIAC’s support groups
- Parent to Parent of CO, http://www.p2p-co.org/
Parent to Parent may be one of the great “hidden gems” in Colorado.  From their website:  ”We are a non-profit organization committed to quality Parent to Parent support across Colorado.  We offer encouragement to each other on the journey of parenting our sons and daughters with disabilities or special health care needs.  We do this by providing emotional and informational support, resources and by matching parents seeking support with a support parent.”
- Sarah Jane Brain Foundation: http://www.thebrainproject.org/

It wasn’t relevant in this case, but if it’s a concussion or TBI, the R.E.A.P. guidelines are a great resource:

Thanks everyone!

I had an email from Kristy Werther, with the following resources to add:
The Brain Injury Alliance of Colorado has a referral program – referral to both the educational system and HCP care coordination – explained at /support/childrens-trust-fund-program/ .

The COkids website has been updated (http://cokidswithbraininjury.com/). We now have information
available on concussion as well as description of the role of our
Brain Injury Regional liaisons throughout the state (please see the
tab “Regional Map”). The calendar will be updated in the near future with upcoming events. Individuals can also receive information on upcoming events by contacting me and requesting to join our TBI listserv.

The CO Dept of Education can also provide support to school professionals that are interested in developing a Brain Injury Team, Concussion Management Protocol, want education/presentation on the new concussion legislation or how to make adjustments/accommodations for a student within the school etc.

Thanks Kristy, a referral to the TBI Trust Fund through BIAC will get sent to the local HCP Office and a Care Coordinator will be assigned. We can help the parents with resources and then also work with the school on specific ways to work with the student and understanding of the surgical proceedure and resulting needs.
