A Little Help

A Little Help is a Colorado nonprofit that connects neighbors to help seniors thrive. We equip community members of all ages to provide direct services for their senior neighbors, including transportation, yard and home chores, handy and technology help, and caregiver respite. We also provide opportunities to foster social connection intergenerationally, from summer picnics and book groups, to speaker panels and happy hours. A Little Help has five Branches throughout Colorado: Denver, Jefferson, Delta, and Larimer Counties. Annual membership is 'pay what you can' to receive services.

We specialize in diagnosing and treating traumatic brain injuries. We utilize functional neurological testing that helps us determine neurological deficits at the pathological and sub pathological levels. Any abnormal neurological findings that are not equal from side to side is often a sign of hemisphericity (one side is not functioning the same as the other - often causing symptoms that don't clear up by conventional means). Specific exercises are designed for each patient to help regain their lost function. We also utilize brain mapping (QEEG) technology here that is able to show definitive results of a traumatic brain injury. A mTBI definitive database is also run to determine the likelihood of having a mTBI. We are able to determine asymmetry, coherence and how well each area of the brain is communicating with each other. "Heartstrings & Hoofbeats" is a PATH Int'l (Professional Assoc of Therapeutic Horsemanship) Center in the DTC area. The movement of a horse perfectly mirrors the walk of a human. Research is currently being conducted to see if as a result of this patterning, synaptic connections may be reinforced. Excercises to cross the proprioceptive system are incorporated. Sequential processes (1,2,3 steps) are reinforced as needed. Equine facilitated mental health activities/stress and anxiety-reduction are popular. Our horses are the co-therapists. They are nonjudgemental, accepting and listen well. We do our best to match clients to the appropriate horse. Each horse has a different "gait" or movement. In addition, each horse reacts differently to TBI clients. Some are much better with the angered and frustrated client; some horses are better with the withdrawn or silent client. At our Center, we have 2 registered PATH certified instructorsd (formerly NARHA) .

A new Lakewood service, Hope For the Challenged Brain, combines state-of-the-art brain wave evaluation and training for those in our community experiencing trauma, early dementia and other age-related brain disorders, along with psychological support for their families and caregivers. We address brain dysregulations both large and small at their causative root using neurofeedback – - a non-invasive, non-drug, no side-effect, gentle yet effective training process for the brain. What makes our services unique is we use the only real-time digital EEG available (four times more sensitive than traditional clinical EEGs) to detect normally hidden brain wave patterns associated with TBI and early signs of dementia . Single Family Housing Repair Loans & Grants

Also known as the Section 504 Home Repair program, this provides loans to very-low-income homeowners to repair, improve or modernize their homes or grants to elderly very-low-income homeowners to remove health and safety hazards.

Who may apply for this program?
To qualify, you must:
Be the homeowner and occupy the house
Be unable to obtain affordable credit elsewhere
Have a family income below 50 percent of the area median income
For grants, be age 62 or older and not be able to repay a repair loan

What is an eligible area? Applicants may check the address of their home to determine eligibility.

How may funds be used? Loans may be used to repair, improve or modernize homes or remove health and safety hazards Grants must be used to remove health and safety hazards

Is there a deadline to apply? Home loans are available year round as long as funding is available Home loan applications are processed in the order they are received

TBI Health and Recovery Consultant

Early in recovery from a traumatic brain injury, emphasis is often placed on the physical and cognitive rehabilitation of the patient. As the survivor tries to move forward in life it is common for several emotional difficulties to develop. With few resources and/or knowledge on how to cope, many are left to fend for themselves. My goal is to fill this gap in treatment by focusing on the long-term emotional health of the individual. It is common for survivors to report difficulty with chronic stress, depression and anxiety. A survivor cannot reach their full potential, and live a happy and productive life if struggling with these kinds of emotional disturbances.

I carry a Masters in Science with a specialization in Health Psychology. My focus is on stress and coping, with importance given to stress reduction techniques and adaptive coping. In many cases, in order to reduce the uncomfortable feeling of stress, survivors engage in maladaptive coping that will only advance negative emotional states. My goal is to provide clients with healthy stress management approaches that can be utilized in a variety of situations while simultaneously decreasing maladaptive behaviors. My approach has shown that targeting and treating stress factors following TBI may aid in overall health outcome, both physically and emotionally. Some techniques that can counter stress are mindfulness, physical activity, journaling, meditation, cognitive reappraisal/reframing, nutritional approaches, abdominal breathing, visualization, social support and coping with grief and the loss of self.

By examining personal goals and struggles of the client, I can provide counseling and consultation services that may aid in the emotional recovery of the individual and family. My approach is to keep counseling brief and solution focused.

TBI Therapy
