The Brain Injury Association of Colorado (BIAC) envisions our state to be one in which all survivors can thrive, including those that have been or are currently involved in the legal system. Research shows that individuals who have been incarcerated are 7 times more likely to have experienced a brain injury than the general population.
Our goal is to offer support for these individuals so they may improve their well-being and strengthen the greater community. We approach individuals involved in the legal system with the same compassion and nondiscriminatory mindset as we do for all survivors of an injury to the brain.

The Denver Brain Injury Reentry program is a grant funded project by Caring for Denver Foundation, awarded in 2020, and expanded in 2023. The program focuses on increasing the well-being, resiliency, and independence of brain injury survivors who are involved in the legal system. This program provides services to brain injury survivors both in custody and out of custody, as long as they are engaging in specific county treatment courts and district level problem solving courts.

The courts that are currently engaged in the Denver BI Reentry Program are: Denver County Sobriety Court, Wellness Program, HEM (Helping, Encouraging, and Motivating) Program, and Outreach court. As well as Denver District Problem Solving Courts: DIVERT, RESTART, Veteran’s Treatment, and Competency REACH court.
