Military/Veteran AHEAD is a psychoeducational class for military members and veterans living with brain injuries. In this class, you will learn how the brain works and how injury can affect thinking, feelings, and daily life. Lessons are simple, clear, and easy to follow. The class is based on the MindSource AHEAD program and helps you better understand your symptoms and your recovery.

During class, you will learn tools to help with memory, stress, strong emotions, and daily routines. You will practice ways to talk with others and solve everyday problems with more confidence. The class is a safe and welcoming space where you can share, listen, and learn with people who understand military and veteran life.

The class is co-facilitated by two Brain Injury Association of Colorado staff members, including one who is a veteran, see below.

Meet Katelyn Stollsteimer:

Katelyn is a Reentry Specialist with BIAC and currently works with survivors in Denver’s Veterans Treatment Court (VTC). She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, with a minor in Victims and Victim Services from the University of Colorado Denver. Previously, she worked in a specialty court program at Denver County Court, giving her a wealth of experience navigating the legal system and understanding the unique challenges individuals face while involved in it.

Katelyn has greatly enjoyed her time working with Veterans in Denver’s VTC and is eager to continue expanding her knowledge while building meaningful connections with survivors. Her connection to brain injury is deeply personal, as she had a family member impacted by brain injury. This experience fuels her passion to advocate, provide support, and foster connection with survivors at BIAC. She is excited to continue pursuing this passion through facilitating AHEAD.

Personal Life & Interests

Outside of her professional work, Katelyn loves to travel, especially to places with great hiking. Her favorite place she has visited so far is Zion National Park in Utah, and she also enjoys exploring the Rocky Mountains here in Colorado. She loves reading, adding new plants to her ever-growing collection, and attending concerts. Sharing these experiences with family and friends is deeply important to her and brings her the greatest joy.

Meet Fred Hinton: Veteran, Advocate, and Survivor

Fred Hinton brings a wealth of life experience and a deep-seated passion for service to our community. A dedicated patriot, Fred served 22 years in the United States Army, including three combat deployments, two to Iraq and one to Afghanistan.

His commitment to the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) community is deeply personal. As a TBI survivor himself, Fred embarked on a journey to understand the complexities of his own injury. This quest for knowledge transformed into a calling to give back, helping others navigate the same challenges he has faced.

Personal Life & Interests

Beyond his professional and military life, Fred’s foundation is his family.

  • Family Man: He has been happily married to Trudy for 32 years.
  • Proud Parent & Grandparent: He is the father of three adult children and the doting grandfather of one grandson.

Mission Statement

Fred is a firm believer in the power of shared growth. He loves his work and is eager to foster a collaborative environment. His goal for the AHEAD participants is for everyone to learn together, support one another, and find the tools they need to live their best lives while successfully navigating TBI recovery.
