Southwest Center for Independence

Southwest Center for Independence supports independent living by and for people with disabilities, and facilitates change within the community for the inclusion of all people. We envision a world where all people with disabilities are valued friends and neighbors, receiving the supports they need to lead the lives they desire, defining their own quality of life and contributing back to the community.

Advocacy: Through systems advocacy, we educate our community on behalf of people with disabilities not only to change society’s attitudes but also to improve physical access to different facilities, such as housing, healthcare and transportation. In addition, through individual advocacy, we train people to take charge of life choices and overcome situations that reduce the potential for independence.
Information and Referral: We connect people with local, regional and national agencies that may give them the support they need.
Peer Support: We match people with similar disabilities who also share similar interests and goals with one another and provide the meeting space so that they can begin to build a supportive relationship and avoid isolation, a common problem among people who have disabilities and that often leads to depression, decreased self-esteem and hopelessness.
Independent Living Skills Training: Upon request, we provide training and problem solving to help people be more independent in different life areas.
Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers: Program provides rental assistance to 75 low-income people/families with disabilities.Under the Federal Section 8 program, funded by the Department of Housing & Urban Development, we provide a rental subsidy to people with disabilities who meet the HUD income requirements. We provide more than clerical support
