Concussion Center at the Orthopaedic & Spine Center of the Rockies (OCR)

Our team of sports medicine professionals has taken care of thousands of competitive and recreational athletes from the Rocky Mountain region, across the country, and even around the world.

Many athletes have come to Orthopaedic & Spine Center of the Rockies (OCR) to receive highly specialized care for knee, shoulder, and other, often complex injuries.
We also have experience treating competitors at all levels—from youth recreation leagues through high school and college levels and up to professional athletes.
Locally, our physicians and Athletic Trainers work with Colorado State University, Colorado Eagles hockey, Colorado Ice arena football, rodeo, and a large number of high school and club sports.

Regional Concussion Center
Developing a specialized Concussion Center for the region was a natural fit for OCR, given the athletes and teams we serve. As the need emerged for comprehensive care to help athletes return to activities safely after a concussion, OCR developed the Regional Concussion Center. It is staffed by a wide range of specialized healthcare professionals.
Alissa Wicklund, PhD, our concussion specialist, plays the central role in evaluating and treating athletes with concussions. Dr. Wicklund is a board-certified neuropsychologist specializing in the assessment of cognitive and behavioral symptoms of a concussion. She also specializes in the use of the many computerized and clinical tools that assist in the diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Wicklund treats athletes with acute and lingering symptoms following a concussion, as well as those who have suffered multiple concussions during their lifetime.

Owl Education Group

Dysexecutive Syndrome, or deficiencies in Executive Functioning Skills, are the invisible disability, often leaving children and adolescents frustrated, unmotivated, and without hope. As an Executive Functioning Coach, I work with children and adolescents on developing skills to become effective learners and provide tools for independently managing working memory, reasoning, task flexibility, problem solving, emotional/behavioral regulation, planning and execution. We don't use check lists and we don't organize your binders; clients are given intake testing in order to drive an individualized, goal based program with frequent progress monitoring. Students are observed in their school and home setting. Training occurs in an office setting, following mastery, skills are then generalized to the school and home, gradually leading to the independent execution of skills. The aim of Executive Functioning Coaching is to empower the client by providing them internalized competency in problem solving. In addition, coaching provides tools to families and school staff, in order to develop a partnership for success across settings.

Trumpet Behavioral Health

Trumpet Behavioral Health is a renowned national autism treatment provider that specializes in providing home-based and center-based ABA therapy to children. ABA, or applied behavior analysis, is the most effective treatment for individuals with autism, and it is the only therapy endorsed by the U.S. Surgeon General to treat autism.

ABA uses an evidence-based approach to measure behavior, teach socially significant skills and evaluate children’s progress in using these skills. Researchers have analyzed how people learn to develop ABA as a way to increase positive behaviors and decrease the incidence of challenging behaviors, resulting in meaningful and lasting improvement in children with autism.

ABA is different for each child because it is tailored to the individual client’s needs. In many cases, it starts with teaching basic skills, such as listening and imitating, which build the foundation for children to learn complex skills, such as social interactions and self-care routines.

Untapped Learning

Untapped Learning (previously Stride Learning) is an education startup that helps middle school, high school, and college students develop their executive function skills. We focus on improving organization, managing time, building routines, and more.

In one-on-one, weekly sessions, our mentors help students look through their portals and teacher websites to make a comprehensive plan for all upcoming schoolwork. In this plan, we break down big assignments into small, manageable tasks. Having a schedule to follow holds students accountable. So much can happen between sessions, so our mentors check in with their students throughout the week with texts and calls.

We know our mentoring program can be beneficial to students recovering from brain injuries; their executive function skills are often impaired post-TBI. We offer this support and accountability to help students succeed academically — despite their setbacks.
