Balance Chiropractic

We are an Upper Cervical Specific Chiropractic office that utilizes the N.U.C.C.A method to correct mechanics of the upper neck (an area usually over looked when considering recovery from TBI and ABI's). We NEVER pop twist or crack the spine and we require patients to undergo 4 objective measurements to gauge whether some one is a candidate for our care, and to serve as a baseline for tracking progress through a corrective process.

Trauma to the upper neck relates to traumatic brain injuries on several fronts. The most important and scientifically proliferating front is regarding hemo dyanmics through the upper neck and into the brain, along with CerebroSpinal Fluid (CSF) flow around the brain and in to the spinal cord. Essentially an injury to the brain takes ~90 G forces while an injury to the neck takes ~10 G forces. Research along with anecdotal evidence from upper neck doctors around the world is pointing towards phenomenal benefits with TBI/ABI survivors and their long term healing (along with other proven rehabilitative methods)

Balance Education

The style of myofascial mobilizations and movement therapies I practice gives detailed proprioception, active and passive, interoceptive and exteroceptive information to the cerebellum and sensory- as well as motormaps in the neocortex. The approach of helping a client find gravity as their support and mapping their body and peripersonal space in detail gives empowerment and agency as well as in almost all cases a lot better balance and the ability to let go of strain patterns. The force of gravity is experienced as a support for the whole physical structure, and "good" posture allows for a multitude of options, detailed easy mobility in most joints, and a sense of supporting the core from the feet through the pelvis so that the shoulders can be dropped down the back without pulling. Particulary in clients with TBI/PCS history I have seen better coordination and effortless grace after just a few sessions. Headache and migraine triggers can often be eliminated or become much rarer (usually by treating occipital nerve paths and opening space between myofascial structures so nerve entrapment in the periphery is removed.)Chronic pain patterns can be treated by giving more information to the brain that creates sensations of strength and support (recent research into touch and motorrecptors shows that more proprioceptive information inhibits pain (more accurately "potential danger") information.

Bowenwork Body Therapy

Bowenwork, also known as Bowen therapy has been known to be very helpful in concussion recovery especially if applied the same day as injury. Even if it has been a long time since the day of injury, Bowen may still be able to help restart your body's own healing processes so as to move your nervous system past the point where it has become "stuck." It is suggested that you try at least two to three initial treatments in order to see if it is the right treatment for you. Clients can see results after the first visit, but it can also take as many as 6 to 10 visits depending on how long the injury has been seated in the body. Ongoing maintenance may be indicated. Every body responds in its own way to Bowen. I would welcome the opportunity to introduce you to this gentle, yet effective therapy. Clients are treated on a massage table or in a sitting position and may wear light, loose clothing if they do not wish to dress down to their under-clothing. Treatments last approximately one hour.

Brain Injury Behavioral & Neuropsychological Services

All behavior makes sense in context. As someone whose family has been touched by traumatic brain injury (TBI), I am familiar with the unique challenges that families face when recovering from such a life-altering event. A licensed clinical psychologist, I specialize in all things brain-related, providing comprehensive evaluations that look at factors related to one's injury as well as other contributory variables. Typically, such evaluations can take up to eight hours, but in the comfort of your own home (or at my office in Loveland), we can try to understand what's going on with regard to problems with memory, attention, executive function, and visuospatial abilities as well as possible changes in personality. No two brain injuries are alike, just as no two people bring into their TBI/ABI the same developmental, educational, occupational, social, and psychological backgrounds. At Brain Injury Behavioral & Neuropsychological Services, you will get someone who takes the time to try to understand the ramifications of your injury and how it has affected you, both good and bad. Navigating the road back from brain injury is never easy, and the topsy-turvy world of unknowns can make recovery feel like an impossibility. For almost two decades, it has been my privilege to work in the field of brain injury in a number of different capacities, from advocate and program coordinator to Certified Brain Injury Specialist and Licensed Professional Counselor. In addition to neuropsychological evaluations, I provide home-based therapy for people with brain injury. In 2002, Brain Injury Behavioral Services was born, and after acquiring my doctoral in clinical psychology in 2014, I expanded the name to include Neuropsychological Services. Fifteen years as a journalist for various publications, from the Caribbean to New York City, failed to give me the sense of calling I now feel as I journey with others trying to find hope and make sense of their topsy-turvy world. Brain Injury Research Center at TIRR/Memorial Hermann

The Brain Injury Research Center (BIRC) at TIRR Memorial Hermann brings together world-renowned researchers to study the many complicated facets of recovery from brain injury. The BIRC has been able to leverage resources from the U.S. Department of Education's National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) and from the National Institutes of Health to conduct research in a manner that facilitates the greatest progress in identifying effective treatments.
