Brain Injury Behavioral & Neuropsychological Services

All behavior makes sense in context. As someone whose family has been touched by traumatic brain injury (TBI), I am familiar with the unique challenges that families face when recovering from such a life-altering event. A licensed clinical psychologist, I specialize in all things brain-related, providing comprehensive evaluations that look at factors related to one's injury as well as other contributory variables. Typically, such evaluations can take up to eight hours, but in the comfort of your own home (or at my office in Loveland), we can try to understand what's going on with regard to problems with memory, attention, executive function, and visuospatial abilities as well as possible changes in personality. No two brain injuries are alike, just as no two people bring into their TBI/ABI the same developmental, educational, occupational, social, and psychological backgrounds. At Brain Injury Behavioral & Neuropsychological Services, you will get someone who takes the time to try to understand the ramifications of your injury and how it has affected you, both good and bad. Navigating the road back from brain injury is never easy, and the topsy-turvy world of unknowns can make recovery feel like an impossibility. For almost two decades, it has been my privilege to work in the field of brain injury in a number of different capacities, from advocate and program coordinator to Certified Brain Injury Specialist and Licensed Professional Counselor. In addition to neuropsychological evaluations, I provide home-based therapy for people with brain injury. In 2002, Brain Injury Behavioral Services was born, and after acquiring my doctoral in clinical psychology in 2014, I expanded the name to include Neuropsychological Services. Fifteen years as a journalist for various publications, from the Caribbean to New York City, failed to give me the sense of calling I now feel as I journey with others trying to find hope and make sense of their topsy-turvy world. I emphasize the role that a community of supportive friends and family play in the healthy recovery of someone with a brain injury. Emerging from the emotional deadness that sometimes follows brain injury isn’t easy, but you’ve struggled long enough. I hope you’ll invite me to join you on your journey back to life.

Comprehensive Neuropsychological and Psychological Services

Neuropsychological assessment
Cognitive rehabilitation treatment-Individual Psychotherapy is a relatively brief type of psychotherapy based on cognitive behavioral models, and has been demonstrated as an effective treatment for anxiety disorders (e.g. panic disorder), depression, chronic pain, insomnia, as well as many other types of disorders

Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy is based on an individual's neuropsychological evaluation test results. Detailed individualized treatment to remediate and/or compensate for cognitive deficits seen in testing is provided to patients in an outpatient setting. The treatment is most effective when begun shortly after injury or illness, and continues throughout the recovery period until the patient reaches their maximum functional level.

Cultivation Counseling

As a counselor/therapist I take a client focused approach to working with you. I see each person as an individual with zero judgement. It is my belief that you have all the tools within you to become your very best self. In our work we will strive to find those tools or sharpen the ones that you already have. To do this we will focus on your mental, physical, and spiritual health. I use traditional talk therapy techniques as well as more experiential work as well. That means if you don't want to sit on a couch and talk we don't have to. I understand that not everyone's process of healing is the same and it shouldn't have to be.

Envision:You addresses the unique needs LGBTQ+ people have when considering and accessing behavioral healthcare. As members of an often misunderstood minority group, they frequently face discrimination, violence, and poor mental health outcomes. Although it requires great strength and courage, seeking support is one of the most important steps a person with a mental health and/or substance use disorder can take. Hope For The Challenged Brain

A new Lakewood service, Hope For the Challenged Brain, combines state-of-the-art brain wave evaluation and training for those in our community experiencing trauma, early dementia and other age-related brain disorders, along with psychological support for their families and caregivers. We address brain dysregulations both large and small at their causative root using neurofeedback – - a non-invasive, non-drug, no side-effect, gentle yet effective training process for the brain. What makes our services unique is we use the only real-time digital EEG available (four times more sensitive than traditional clinical EEGs) to detect normally hidden brain wave patterns associated with TBI and early signs of dementia . Once identified, these injuries are addressed using the same patented technology for training, allowing many of the symptoms associated with head trauma to be remediated. Symptom management and improvement is achieved using this combination of cutting edge, high tech neurofeedback and psychotherapy. We provide a no charge consultation for individuals or families to come in and see our facility and ask as many questions as they like. Additional Contact: Dr. Glenda K. Kym Allison, MA, LPC, ATR-BC: Counselor & Art Psychotherapist

I am an integrated talk and art psychotherapist. I'm a licensed professional counselor and a board certified registered art therapist. I have worked with individuals with brain injury for 9 years. I work with individuals, families and groups. Presently I work with the Glenwood Springs support group on a volunteer basis.

Therapist directed art activities work to provide client relief from depression, anxiety, anger and confusion. This form of therapy facilitates the development of a healthy, whole and loving sense of self. Art therapy works well with the brain injury population in the following ways:
1) Allows the individual express feelings and thoughts he/she does not know how to put into words or is physically unable.
2) Can facilitate the improvement of cognitive function, memory and kinetic skills.
3) Provides a safe way to communicate feelings, thoughts and experiences the individual deems too frightening or taboo to verbalize.
4) Allows the individual to safely discover repressed or new emotions they were not aware they had.

Rocky Mountain Behavioral Medicine

We are a mental health practice that serves the Denver area specializing in neuropsychological, behavioral health, pain assessment and management, and other health concerns for children, adolescents, and adults. Our approach utilizes the biopsychosocial approach to evaluation and treatment; this means we strive to understand the biological, psychological, and social factors that influence the health and wellness of our clients. Our services are often referred to as "behavioral medicine" or "medical psychology;" this is due to taking a holistic approach in our treatment considering the whole person - physical, mental, emotional, and social. We provide neurodevelopmental evaluations that test for learning disorders and ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder evaluations, neuropsychological evaluations that look at brain functioning for those who have suffered a stroke, brain injury, or Alzheimer's, and psychological evaluations which can provide insight into the individual's behaviors and personality.

Rocky Mountain Sibs

Series of supportive, energetic, therapeutic, and fun workshop-style events for kids who have siblings with special needs, including but not limited to brain injury. The age range is 8-12 at this time and focuses on both the joys and concerns that only siblings of kids with special needs can understand and relate to at this level. Although the children with the special needs require much focus from the parents and community, Sibshops maintains that their typically developing siblings do as well, and I am very happy to be providing this service in our community for them. Psychotherapy Services-Regardless of what is bringing you to therapy at this time, I believe transformation and relief are possible. As a society, I believe we've lost touch with ourselves, our dreams, and with other human beings. Therapy provides an opportunity to reconnect deeply with ourselves and others, and to heal our wounds. I am an intuitive, body-centered psychotherapist, and I'm dedicated to my own growth. The foundation of my work is in mindfulness - cultivating the ability to observe our habitual behaviors, thought patterns, and emotional reactions without getting lost in them - decreasing fear, and developing compassion and understanding for who we are and why we do what we do.
