Driving is an essential skill for independence in today's society. Return to driving following injury or problems resulting from disease or surgery, often requires the specialized assistance from rehabilitation professionals who are trained to evaluate and rehabilitate these special needs.
We offer a three component evaluation, which consists of the following:
1. An Occupational Therapy evaluation of pre-driving skills which includes strength, sensation, range of motion, coordination, muscle tone, proprioceptive and kinesthetic movements, visual perceptional skills, vision screening, reaction time and reflexes. Coordination of adaptive equipment may be needed.
2. A brief neuropsychological screening to assess attention and concentration, speed of processing, functional memory, sequential thinking and problem solving. If results from the clinical testing indicate the candidate has potential for driving, then Step 3 is initiated.
3. A behind-the-wheel evaluation with a certified driving rehabilitation specialist in a vehicle with instructor safety brakes.
The full evaluations takes approximately 3-5 hours and can be done in individualized segments if needed. This information is compiled and used to develop a written plan, which may include recommendations for:
Driving with restrictions
No return to driving
Information and recommendations will be provided to the referring physician for final decision making about driving.
