Lehman Disability Planning

I help families plan for the present and future needs of their child with disabilities.

I also help families remember planning is about the entire family, not just one family member. Every person in your family has present and future needs and all deserve consideration in planning.

I offer coaching and consulting services, from review and advice on accessible services for quality of life now and for the future, to helping you define your long-term vision and, of equal importance, to supporting you in completing instructions for clarity in your absence.

Because three domains impact your family’s journey, Disability Benefits, Financial Management and Planning and Legal documentation to ensure protection of your assets and your children, I work with financial advisors and specializing attorneys. If you only have one of these territories covered or they are not coordinated, you do not have a fully considered life care plan for your child.

Quality of life planning and funding encompasses many areas of concern for your children including independence, financial well-being, social and recreational opportunities, housing, education and employment.

Because families are often continually overwhelmed by the responsibilities of the present moment, developing a comprehensive future plan habitually is relegated to a perpetual "to do" list.

I will assemble your team to move your family’s planning from your “to do” list to “DONE!”

Because of my own experience with a medically fragile and developmentally disabled child, I became a statewide leader for change. Working within the Colorado early intervention system, private and public health insurance industries, and disability initiatives and medical practices, I successfully:
- Spearheaded 14 CO statutes to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities and their families,
- Served as Executive Director for the Autism Society of CO
- Chaired the CO Autism Commission and the CO Division of Insurance Consumer Council

Now I share the wisdom I gained on my journey with parents and guardians of children with special needs who are also determined to build a brighter future for their loved ones.

Southwest Center for Independence

Southwest Center for Independence supports independent living by and for people with disabilities, and facilitates change within the community for the inclusion of all people. We envision a world where all people with disabilities are valued friends and neighbors, receiving the supports they need to lead the lives they desire, defining their own quality of life and contributing back to the community.

Advocacy: Through systems advocacy, we educate our community on behalf of people with disabilities not only to change society’s attitudes but also to improve physical access to different facilities, such as housing, healthcare and transportation. In addition, through individual advocacy, we train people to take charge of life choices and overcome situations that reduce the potential for independence.
Information and Referral: We connect people with local, regional and national agencies that may give them the support they need.
Peer Support: We match people with similar disabilities who also share similar interests and goals with one another and provide the meeting space so that they can begin to build a supportive relationship and avoid isolation, a common problem among people who have disabilities and that often leads to depression, decreased self-esteem and hopelessness.
Independent Living Skills Training: Upon request, we provide training and problem solving to help people be more independent in different life areas.
Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers: Program provides rental assistance to 75 low-income people/families with disabilities.Under the Federal Section 8 program, funded by the Department of Housing & Urban Development, we provide a rental subsidy to people with disabilities who meet the HUD income requirements. We provide more than clerical support

Your Trusted Patient Advocate, LLC

I assist clients either just entering the health care system for the first time or those that have been working with the illness (s) and would like a another set of eyes and ears to advocate for them in their journey. Many of my clients have no other support people close or just want to confirm what they are hearing and experiencing and want to have it explained beyond their level of understanding. I go medical appointments, hospital admissions, ER visits, Lab, therapy sessions, find medical providers suited to my clients needs if requested, etc.

During a diagnosis the most important information is what comes after the words, "you have ...." . However, we find in our profession this is when we should be listening and asking the most questions and clarifying everything said. However, this is also the time we tend to shut down and don't hear anything else. A good advocate takes notes, asks the right questions, discusses long term plans, and follows up on next steps to ensure our clients get the best medical care they deserve. We simply advocate for our clients like they would want to be advocated for, but can't.
