NIDRR Rocky Mt Regional TBI System of Care at Craig Hospital

Since first being designated as a TBI Model System by the National Institute on Disability Rehabilitation and Research (NIDRR) in 1998, the Rocky Mountain Regional Brain Injury System (RMRBIS) has been organized around the nationally-recognized rehabilitation services of Craig Hospital. The RMRBIS also includes five trauma centers, four long-term acute care facilities, and an extensive community-based support network that collaboratively provide a comprehensive multidisciplinary specialty system of TBI care for Colorado and beyond. Northern Colorado Rehabilitation Hospital

At Northern Colorado Rehabilitation Hospital, we provide inpatient rehabilitation to people recovering from disabling diseases and injuries, such as strokes, orthopedic, brain, and spinal cord injuries. Respite Services

Respite is a temporary break/relief for a family member, partner or other person regularly caring for a frail adult.

Providing constant care for a loved one can be emotionally and physically demanding and may lead to caregiver burnout, isolation, and depression.

Respite can range from a few hours, to a full day, or a week or more, depending upon the needs and resources of the family. Respite can be provided: in the home, at an adult day program, or in a long-term care facility.

Volunteers are screened, trained and matched in order to visit older adults who are experiencing isolation or some degree of compromised health.

Restorative Therapies

Restorative Therapies, Inc is the world's leading developer of Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) powered systems, designed to help people with neurological disorders achieve their full potential.
FES is a well-established rehabilitation technique that uses pulses of electrical current to stimulate peripheral nerves evoking muscle contractions and patterned muscle activity. With Restorative Therapies systems, FES creates patterned movement in arms, legs and trunk. FES enables muscles to work and perform activities even though the muscles may be weak or paralyzed through neurological disease or injury. The RT300 FES cycle, RT200 FES seated elliptical, and RT600 stander/stepper use an ergometer combined with FES, allowing for active therapy of the arms and legs, essentially letting muscles do what they are meant to do.
An ergometer is a machine that allows an individual to perform a repetitive activity such as cycling or stepping. It guides the muscle activity evoked by FES into a useful pattern. Ergometers also measure the amount of work that muscles perform during an activity. We motorize our ergometers so they can automatically provide assistance or resistance throughout a therapy session as required by an individual.
Since its launch in 2005 over 30,000 adults and children have undertaken over 800,000 therapy sessions on the RT300. They included people with both complete and incomplete Spinal Cord Injuries, Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, Brain Injury, Transverse Myelitis, Leukodystrophy and Spina Bifida.
Benefits vary from patient to patient but generally include reversal of muscle atrophy; improved local blood circulation; increased range of motion and reduced muscle spasms.

Rocky Mountain Sibs

Series of supportive, energetic, therapeutic, and fun workshop-style events for kids who have siblings with special needs, including but not limited to brain injury. The age range is 8-12 at this time and focuses on both the joys and concerns that only siblings of kids with special needs can understand and relate to at this level. TBI Health and Recovery Consultant

Early in recovery from a traumatic brain injury, emphasis is often placed on the physical and cognitive rehabilitation of the patient. As the survivor tries to move forward in life it is common for several emotional difficulties to develop. With few resources and/or knowledge on how to cope, many are left to fend for themselves. My goal is to fill this gap in treatment by focusing on the long-term emotional health of the individual. It is common for survivors to report difficulty with chronic stress, depression and anxiety. A survivor cannot reach their full potential, and live a happy and productive life if struggling with these kinds of emotional disturbances.

I carry a Masters in Science with a specialization in Health Psychology. My focus is on stress and coping, with importance given to stress reduction techniques and adaptive coping. In many cases, in order to reduce the uncomfortable feeling of stress, survivors engage in maladaptive coping that will only advance negative emotional states. My goal is to provide clients with healthy stress management approaches that can be utilized in a variety of situations while simultaneously decreasing maladaptive behaviors. My approach has shown that targeting and treating stress factors following TBI may aid in overall health outcome, both physically and emotionally. Some techniques that can counter stress are mindfulness, physical activity, journaling, meditation, cognitive reappraisal/reframing, nutritional approaches, abdominal breathing, visualization, social support and coping with grief and the loss of self.

By examining personal goals and struggles of the client, I can provide counseling and consultation services that may aid in the emotional recovery of the individual and family. My approach is to keep counseling brief and solution focused.
